About 1 kilo of gold

Larger bars are the cheapest way to own physical gold, measured per gram. On the other hand, they are harder to split up if you only want to sell part of your holding.

Spot price or retail price?

The figures on this page are the metal value — the pure gold content at the market's price. When you buy from a dealer, you pay spot plus a premium. When you sell, you get spot minus a spread. The difference between the two is your real cost of owning the gold.

VAT

Investment gold with a fineness of at least 900 is exempt from VAT within the EU. Silver, platinum and palladium, on the other hand, are subject to VAT when bought in Denmark, which is a significant difference if you're comparing the metals.

Questions and answers

What does 1 kilo of gold cost today?

1 kilo of pure gold (999) costs the price per gram multiplied by 1000. The amount at the top of the page is today's spot price and is updated several times an hour. If you buy a bar, a premium is added on top of the spot price.

Why is the shop's price higher than the spot price?

The manufacturer has to cast, certify and distribute the bar, and the dealer has a margin. On small bars the premium is highest in percentage terms — a 1-gram bar can cost 10–20% over spot, while a kilo bar is close to it.

What do I get if I sell 1 kilo of gold?

From a gold buyer, typically 90–98% of the spot value for pure investment gold, and 70–95% for jewellery gold. Use the calculator on the page to see the amount for your own fineness.
