About 20 grams of gold
Small bars and coins are easy to resell and suit those who buy a little at a time. The price per gram is, however, higher because the premium to the manufacturer is spread over fewer grams.
Spot price or retail price?
The figures on this page are the metal value — the pure gold content at the market's price. When you buy from a dealer, you pay spot plus a premium. When you sell, you get spot minus a spread. The difference between the two is your real cost of owning the gold.
VAT
Investment gold with a fineness of at least 900 is exempt from VAT within the EU. Silver, platinum and palladium, on the other hand, are subject to VAT when bought in Denmark, which is a significant difference if you're comparing the metals.
Questions and answers
What does 20 grams of gold cost today?
20 grams of pure gold (999) costs the price per gram multiplied by 20. The amount at the top of the page is today's spot price and is updated several times an hour. If you buy a bar, a premium is added on top of the spot price.
Why is the shop's price higher than the spot price?
The manufacturer has to cast, certify and distribute the bar, and the dealer has a margin. On small bars the premium is highest in percentage terms — a 1-gram bar can cost 10–20% over spot, while a kilo bar is close to it.
What do I get if I sell 20 grams of gold?
From a gold buyer, typically 90–98% of the spot value for pure investment gold, and 70–95% for jewellery gold. Use the calculator on the page to see the amount for your own fineness.
