Frequently asked questions about the gold price

What is the gold price today?

The gold price on this page is the spot price on the international market, converted to Danish kroner per gram and per troy ounce. It is updated several times an hour, every weekday around the clock, and reflects trading in 999 fine gold.

Why does the gold price fluctuate during the day?

Gold is traded globally in US dollars. The price in kroner therefore changes both when gold rises or falls, and when the dollar exchange rate moves. Interest-rate expectations, inflation and market unease are the main drivers.

How much will I get for my gold jewellery?

A gold buyer pays for the pure gold content, not the total weight of the piece. If you have 10 grams of 14-karat (585), that equals 5.85 grams of pure gold. On top of that a margin is deducted to cover melting and profit — typically you get 70–95% of the spot value.

What do 585, 750 and 999 mean?

The number is the fineness in thousandths. 585 means 58.5% pure gold (14 karat), 750 means 75% (18 karat) and 999 is pure investment gold (24 karat). The hallmark usually sits inside the ring or on the clasp.

Are the prices on guldgraf.dk an offer?

No. We show the objective market price so you have a starting point before you negotiate. We do not buy or sell gold ourselves.

How to read the gold price

Gold is traded in troy ounces on the international markets — a troy ounce is 31.1035 grams. When the news says gold has risen to a new record level, it is almost always the price per ounce in US dollars they mean. For you as a Dane, two things matter: the ounce price and the exchange rate.

From ounce to gram

On this page we always convert to grams, because that is the unit jewellery and small bars are weighed in. The price per gram is the ounce price divided by 31.1035. If you have a 100-gram bar, you simply scale up.

From pure gold to jewellery gold

The spot price applies to pure gold (999). Jewellery is alloyed with other metals to be hard-wearing, so you must multiply the spot price by the fineness: 14 karat (585) is 58.5% of the spot price per gram.

The margin to the price you get

No buyer pays the full spot price for used gold. There are costs for melting, analysis and profit. When selling jewellery, the payout is typically 70–95% of the metal value — the larger the quantity and the purer the gold, the closer to spot.
