That's why the dollar matters so much

When you read that gold has risen, it almost always refers to the price in dollars per troy ounce. The price in Danish kroner is the product you get when you multiply the dollar price by the dollar exchange rate. Both parts move.

If the dollar falls against the krone while gold stands still in dollars, the gold price in kroner falls — and vice versa. In some periods the currency move alone has accounted for several percent of the annual return on gold measured in kroner.

The euro and the fixed exchange-rate policy

Denmark keeps the krone stable against the euro within a narrow band. That's why the gold price in kroner is practically the same curve as the price in euro, just multiplied by about 7.46. Switch currency at the top of the page and compare for yourself.
