25 years of gold — the key turning points
When the millennium began, a gram of gold cost less than 50 kroner. Gold was deeply unpopular after two decades of falling prices, and central banks were selling their reserves. Since then the price has more than tripled — through the financial crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and a long series of geopolitical shocks.
2001–2011: The big rally
After the dot-com collapse and 11 September 2001, gold turned around. Cheaper money, a weak dollar and the 2008 financial crisis lifted the price from around 60 to over 210 kroner per gram in September 2011 — a record that wasn't beaten for another nine years.
2012–2015: Fall and setbacks
As fear subsided and the US central bank began raising rates, gold fell for four years in a row to around 215 kroner per gram by the end of 2015. Many declared the gold era over.
2016–today: The record chase
Brexit, the pandemic, war in Ukraine and record purchases by central banks turned the trend around again. Gold has risen in most years since 2015 and set new records in 2020, 2024 and 2025.
What you can use the history for
No price predicts the future, but the history shows gold's role: a slow, volatile store of value that typically thrives when real rates are low and confidence in paper currency and equities wavers. Compare the years in the table above yourself, or see what an investment would have returned.

Questions and answers

Why has the gold price risen so much since 1999?
In short: lower real interest rates, large purchases by central banks, financial crises, the pandemic and geopolitical uncertainty. At the same time only a limited amount of new gold is produced each year, so demand feeds straight through to the price.
