Selling gold in Denmark – how to get the right price
From hallmark and weight to comparing offers: a step-by-step guide to selling gold jewellery, coins and bars without giving money away.
The chart you're selling into
Gold price per gram
Step by step
1. Find out what you have. Read the hallmark (333–999 or karat) with a loupe, and weigh the jewellery — ideally on a jeweller's scale accurate to 0.01 g. The hallmark guide and the weight table will help you along.
2. Calculate the metal value. Use the gold calculator: weight × fineness × spot price. That figure is your starting point — anything below it is the buyer's margin for negotiation.
3. Get at least three offers. Ask specifically: "What do you pay per gram for 585 gold?" — not "what will I get for my chain?". The price per gram can be compared across offers, even for mixed fineness lots, using the scrap gold calculator.
4. Understand the offer format. Some buyers pay per gram, others give a "package price". Package prices almost always hide a lower payout percentage. Always ask for the price per gram per fineness.
5. Check the terms. ID requirements, payment (cash/transfer), right of withdrawal for remote sales, and whether valuing or posting jewellery costs anything. Read the small print before you send anything off.
6. Sell at the right time — but don't wait too long. The chart above shows the last 12 months. Timing it to the day is impossible, but knowing today's spot price before you walk through the door is the simplest edge you have.
What you should NOT do
Don't respond to unsolicited offers from leaflets and phone calls claiming that "the gold price is at its peak right now". And skip mail-order forms where you have to guess a price yourself — serious buyers state a concrete payout percentage of spot.
Jewellery with collector value
Designer jewellery, antiques and pieces with gemstones can be worth more than their gold weight. Get an antiques dealer or auction house valuation before sending them off for melting — gold can't be unmelted.

Sort the gold into piles by hallmark, weigh each pile and add it here.
Total metal value
24,50 g in total · 13,06 g pure gold
The larger the total quantity, the better the percentage you can usually negotiate. Ask for the weight and purity to be written down for each pile before the gold disappears into a bag.

Questions and answers
Where do I get the best price for my gold?
Call or write to at least three buyers — jewellers, buy-back shops and online buyers — and ask for a price per gram for your exact fineness. Compare it with the spot price on this page: a fair offer is typically between 70 and 95% of the metal value.
What does 'payout as a percentage of spot' mean?
The spot price is the market rate for pure gold. The buyer pays a share of it — the higher, the better. 95% for large quantities of pure gold is excellent; 50% for small 8 karat items is low, but it does happen.
Do I need ID when I sell gold?
Most serious buyers require valid ID for purchases above a certain amount as part of anti-money-laundering rules. That's normal and a good sign: a buyer who doesn't ask for anything at all is often the one who pays the least.
