What sets the metals apart?
Gold
The most liquid precious metal and the only one demanded primarily as a store of value. Central banks buy gold; industry only uses a fraction. That's why the gold price tends to follow interest rates, inflation and uncertainty rather than the business cycle.
Silver
Half investment metal, half industrial metal. Solar panels and electronics drive a large part of demand, which makes the price more cycle-sensitive and more volatile than gold.
Platinum
Rarer than gold, but dependent on the car industry. Production is heavily concentrated in South Africa, so supply disruptions can move the price quickly.
Palladium
The most volatile of the four. Almost all demand comes from catalytic converters in petrol cars, and the electrification of the vehicle fleet is a structural headwind.
