Frequently asked questions about the gold price

The questions we hear most often — about prices, calculators, karat, VAT and selling. If you don't find the answer here, we have guides for most of it.

What does a gram of gold cost today?

The price is shown at the top of the homepage and updates automatically. You can also see the price for your exact fineness on the price pages — e.g. 585 (14 karat) or 750 (18 karat).

How do I work out what my gold is worth?

Weigh the jewellery, read the hallmark (e.g. 585), and use the gold calculator: weight × fineness × today's spot price. The calculator also shows what you'll typically be paid on sale (70–95%).

Why is the price of my jewellery lower than the spot price?

The spot price applies to pure gold on the world market. Buyers have to melt and refine the jewellery and take on a risk by doing so — that's why they typically pay 70–95% of the metal value depending on fineness and quantity.

What do 585, 750 and karat mean?

The numbers are parts of pure gold per 1,000: 585 is 14 karat (58.5%), 750 is 18 karat (75%), and 999 is pure gold. See the full overview in the karat guide.

Is gold VAT-exempt in Denmark?

Yes — investment gold (at least 99.5% pure gold as a bar or recognised coin) is VAT-exempt. Silver and jewellery gold, on the other hand, are subject to 25% VAT. See the guide on gold and tax.

How often are the prices updated?

Live rates update every five minutes during trading hours. Historical rates are based on daily closing prices, and all charts update automatically while the page is open.

Can I see the price in currencies other than kroner?

Yes — choose DKK, EUR or USD from the menu at the top of the page. All prices, charts and calculators switch with it.

How far back does your chart data go?

The history goes back to 4 January 1999 — over 7,000 trading days. The shortest periods (1 and 7 days) show trading in five-minute intervals.

What's the difference between the gold price per gram and per ounce?

A troy ounce is 31.1034768 grams and the international trading unit. The world market quotes per ounce, while jewellery and bars in Denmark are typically traded per gram — we show both.

Are your prices the same as at a dealer?

No. We show the spot price — the world market rate. Dealers add a premium on purchase (typically 2–8%) and pay a little under spot on buy-back. The spot price is therefore your reference point when assessing an offer.

The gold price follows a few, but powerful, drivers: real interest rates, the dollar, central bank buying and geopolitical uncertainty.
