How the calculator works
The sum is simple once you know the three figures: the weight, the fineness and the spot price.
Weight in grams × fineness = pure gold in grams. Pure gold × spot price per gram = the metal value. Example: a necklace weighing 18 grams at 585 contains 18 × 0.585 = 10.53 grams of pure gold. If the spot price is 700 kr per gram, the metal value is 7,371 kr.
Find the hallmark
On Danish jewellery, the hallmark typically sits inside the ring shank, on the clasp or on a small tag on the chain. Common figures are 333, 375, 585 and 750. Older Danish heirlooms are often 14 karat, while newer investment products are 999.
What can you negotiate?
The share of the spot price. Move the slider in the calculator and see what the difference between 75% and 90% means for exactly your quantity — that's usually where the real money lies. Always ask for the weight and fineness to be stated in writing, and get two quotes if you can.
Questions about the value of gold
How do I weigh my gold correctly?
Use a digital kitchen scale with two decimals, or better still a jeweller's scale. Weigh each piece separately, and don't include stones, pearls or clasps made of other metal — they don't count as gold.
What if there is no hallmark?
Without a hallmark, the fineness can only be established with an acid test or an X-ray machine, which gold buyers and jewellers have. For now, assume 585, the most common fineness in Danish jewellery, and have it tested before selling.
Do gemstones on a pendant count?
Only the metal counts. Stones are deducted from the weight, and unless they are certified diamonds of a certain size, they rarely add extra value in an ordinary buy-back deal.
Why don't I get the full spot price?
The buyer has to melt, analyse and resell the metal, and has costs and a margin along the way. Typically 70–95% of the metal value is paid out. Large quantities and pure investment gold sit at the high end.
