The alloy
Roughly equal parts silver and copper keep the yellow tone. The higher the karat, the deeper and more saturated the colour — 750 is noticeably warmer than 585.
Colour does not change the value
When a buyer melts a piece down, only the gold content counts. Palladium in white gold has some value, but it is not paid for separately in ordinary jewellery trading.
Questions and answers
Is yellow gold worth more than other gold colours?
No. The colour comes from the non-gold part of the alloy, which is worth close to nothing. A 10 gram 585 piece has the same metal value whether it is white, rose or yellow.
How do I recognise yellow gold?
Look at the stamp inside the ring or on the clasp. The colour tells you the alloy, the three digits tell you the value.
Does the plating affect the price?
Rhodium plating weighs a fraction of a gram and adds nothing to the metal value. It only matters for the look, not for what a buyer pays.
